Before her time at the media company, she served as a spokesperson at the Department of Homeland Security under former Secretary Kristi Noem and has frequently appeared across conservative media outlets, including Fox News and Newsmax, to defend the administration’s platform and policies.

In a statement posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, Zacharia described her selection as White House press secretary as "the honor of a lifetime." She vowed to effectively communicate to the American people the major legislative and executive wins that the administration achieves on a daily basis.

While the White House has not yet announced an official start date for Zacharia, her appointment comes at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding press access and administrative transparency. The Trump administration, which frequently characterizes itself as the most transparent in modern history, has not held a formal press briefing in 36 days. The last formal appearance in the briefing room occurred in early September when Vice President J.D. Vance took questions from reporters.

President Trump officially announced his selection of Zacharia in a post on Truth Social, praising her for what he termed an unblemished record of support and describing her as a loyal and brilliant defender of the administration from its earliest days.

"She is, likewise, a devoted fan and member of MAGA!" Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added that he remains confident Zacharia will deliver strong results for the country as the next press secretary, noting that she maintains the respect of the media, the American public, and administration officials, and will work collaboratively with all parties involved.

The New York Times first reported that Zacharia had been tapped by the White House for the critical communications role. Zacharia, who currently resides in California and earned her law degree from the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, brings a diverse background in both legal and political communications. She previously worked as general counsel for nearly three years at Fix California, a conservative non-profit organization founded by Ric Grenell, who served as Acting Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term. The organization was established to promote a conservative policy agenda throughout the state of California.

In addition to her legal and public relations background, Zacharia was appointed in June to the advisory board of NovaRed Mining Inc., a Vancouver-based Canadian mining company, according to a corporate announcement. Notably, just a week prior to Zacharia’s appointment, former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also joined the NovaRed Mining advisory board, tying the two former colleagues together in a new capacity outside of federal service.

Zacharia steps into the role previously held by Karoline Leavitt, who made history by becoming the youngest White House press secretary ever appointed at the age of 27. Leavitt’s transition out of the West Wing was marked by a career move into cable news; the network announced on Monday that she will join Fox News as an on-air contributor beginning November 1. Leavitt is the third former press secretary from the Trump administration to secure a prominent role at the network.

President Trump originally announced Leavitt’s departure via a Truth Social post, stating that she would transition into one of his top outside advisers and serve as an influential voice within the Republican Party as the administration works to defy historical trends and secure victories in the upcoming midterm elections.

In response to the announcement, Leavitt shared an extensive statement on X expressing deep gratitude to the President and the broader White House team. She emphasized that she would remain a vocal and dedicated advocate for the MAGA movement and the Republican Party in her new capacity.

Leavitt’s departure followed a significant personal milestone. She gave birth to her second child, Viviana, in May, taking maternity leave that same month before ultimately deciding to step down permanently from her demanding government role to dedicate more time to her young family.

Throughout her tenure, Leavitt became emblematic of the broader relationship between the Trump administration and the press. Trump’s time in office has consistently been marked by a contentious dynamic with mainstream news organizations, which the President has repeatedly criticized and attacked. Leavitt leaned into this combative dynamic during her time at the podium, earning a reputation for her sharp retorts, acerbic remarks, and swift deflections during daily press briefings.

Zacharia will now assume these duties amid an ongoing and deeply entrenched battle over media access to the highest levels of government. On September 18, the administration banned POLITICO, CNN, and MS NOW from the White House grounds, triggering a swift and widespread legal challenge from media organizations and press freedom advocates. Although the outlets’ physical access to the White House was briefly restored after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against the ban, the administration has continued to restrict POLITICO and CNN from boarding Air Force One. These ongoing restrictions have prevented the outlets from carrying out their traditional White House pool duties, drawing renewed blowback and condemnation from journalistic societies.

Furthermore, Zacharia enters the West Wing at a politically vulnerable moment for the administration. President Trump is currently confronting record-low approval ratings driven largely by public dissatisfaction with his handling of the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has exacerbated economic pressures and contributed to rising domestic inflation. Simultaneously, the fast-approaching November midterms threaten to upend the political landscape, placing the Republican party’s narrow control over both chambers of Congress in jeopardy.

As Zacharia prepares to take the podium, she will be tasked with steering the administration’s messaging through these domestic and international headwinds, defending its policies against sharp criticism, and managing a deeply strained relationship with the national press corps.

Zacharia currently works as a communications adviser at Trump Media and Technology Group, the parent company operating Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.
