According to reports from Law360, the plaintiff, Pena-Emilia Williams, filed her complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Wednesday. The lawsuit contends that the security lapse exposed a wide array of highly sensitive personally identifiable information, including names, Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, and government identification numbers. In the complaint, Williams argues that the theft represents a permanent security failure—describing the unauthorized disclosure as a bell that cannot be unrung for the impacted employees and clients whose data was compromised.

The underlying security incident came to light after Sheppard Mullin formally disclosed the breach to the California attorney general’s office on October 2. According to the firm’s disclosures, the breach originated when an attorney at the firm fell victim to a sophisticated social engineering attack. As a result of the deception, the attorney inadvertently handed over sensitive documents to an unknown third party, granting malicious actors an entry point into parts of the firm’s digital environment.

In her court filing, Williams accused Sheppard Mullin of gross negligence regarding its cybersecurity practices, specifically claiming that the firm failed to properly train its personnel to recognize and resist social engineering tactics and neglected to maintain adequate digital safeguards to intercept unauthorized data transfers. Williams worked as a paralegal at the firm from 2022 until March of this year, giving her firsthand insight into internal operations during a portion of the relevant timeframe. Beyond the allegations of weak technological defenses and insufficient training, Williams also asserted that the firm violated California law by failing to notify affected individuals within the required statutory timeframe following the discovery of the breach.

The lawsuit underscores what the plaintiff describes as a systemic failure in the firm’s security posture. "Defendant had no effective means to prevent, detect, stop or mitigate breaches of its systems—thereby allowing cybercriminals unrestricted access to its employees’ and clients’ employees’ personally identifiable information," Williams wrote in her October 7 complaint, emphasizing the severe nature of the unauthorized access.

This legal challenge places Sheppard Mullin onto an increasingly crowded roster of major law firms facing class action lawsuits and litigation over data breaches and cybersecurity incidents in 2026. The legal sector has experienced a notable uptick in cyber-related scrutiny as bad actors target law firms not only for their own internal records but also for the confidential corporate and financial data entrusted to them by major commercial clients.

The broader industry trend is reflected in several similar cases filed earlier this year. In July, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr was hit with a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia by a former client following an accidental disclosure of client data. Similarly, in June, Fox Rothschild faced a data breach lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, a matter tied directly to a ransomware group’s campaign. These recurring legal battles highlight a mounting pressure on legal institutions to fortify their digital infrastructures, educate their attorneys and staff on evolving social engineering threats, and streamline their compliance with state and federal data protection laws.

As the litigation proceeds in the Central District of California, representatives for both Pena-Emilia Williams and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton have not responded to requests for comment regarding the pending class action.

By Victor Li October 9, 2026 A former paralegal at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton has filed a purported class action lawsuit alleging that the prominent law firm failed to adequately protect personal information stolen during an August cyberattack, an incident she asserts has affected at least 1,000 individuals.
