This initiative comes in direct response to a comprehensive and revealing report on debanking practices recently published by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), titled “Guaranteeing Fair Banking for All Americans.”

The landmark OCC report uncovered troubling patterns across the banking sector, finding that the nine largest national banks under its federal supervision—JPMorgan Chase Bank, Bank of America, Citibank, Wells Fargo Bank, U.S. Bank, Capital One, PNC Bank, TD Bank, and BMO Bank—maintained internal policies or engaged in operational practices that actively denied or restricted financial access to Americans. According to the federal review, these limitations were imposed based on customers’ political or religious beliefs, or because of a customer’s otherwise lawful business activities.

To substantiate its findings, the OCC report included direct excerpts from internal bank documents, including internal emails and administrative correspondence, which revealed biased and discriminatory decision-making processes at the highest corporate levels. The report demonstrated that entire economic sectors were frequently the victims of systemic debanking, with firearm manufacturers and sellers, traditional energy companies in the oil and gas sector, and tobacco businesses emerging as the most notable targets of financial exclusion.

"It is appalling that these banks targeted American consumers for their political, social, or religious beliefs that did not align with the Biden Administration or its leftist allies," said CFPB Acting Director Mark Paoletta, sharply criticizing the previous federal posture toward the financial sector. "Many of those targeted were supporters of President Trump. These thuggish tactics, which were also a defining feature of the Biden-Chopra CFPB, have no place in America."

Acting Director Paoletta further commended the Treasury Department and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for conducting the thorough review that brought these practices to light. "We thank the Department of the Treasury and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for conducting its review to shed light on these shameful practices," Paoletta added. "The CFPB will fully investigate whether the institutions featured in OCC’s report and others have complied with federal consumer financial laws and take appropriate action."

Under its statutory mandate, the CFPB holds primary supervisory and enforcement authority for depository institutions with over $10 billion in assets, which includes all nine of the major national banks named in the OCC report. In addition to these large banking institutions, the bureau also oversees certain nonbank financial institutions to assess and ensure their strict compliance with federal consumer financial laws.

The CFPB’s latest announcement forms a core component of the agency’s broader undertaking to implement Executive Order 14331, titled “Guaranteeing Fair Access to Banking for All Americans,” and to vigorously advance its stated priority of remedying the phenomenon of debanking. As part of this sweeping regulatory push, the bureau is actively evaluating financial institutions for compliance with foundational federal statutes, including the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Of particular focus are the statutory adverse action notice requirements mandated under these laws, as well as statutory prohibitions against Unfair, Deceptive, or Abusive Acts or Practices (UDAAP). When data and preliminary reviews warrant, the agency does not hesitate to open formal investigations.

Prior to today’s announcement, the CFPB undertook a thorough internal review of its Examination Manual, official guidance, existing regulations, and other educational and operational materials utilized to regulate or examine financial institutions under its jurisdiction. This review was conducted to ensure that these regulatory tools do not incorporate reputation risk concepts that could inadvertently or intentionally result in unlawful debanking. Furthermore, the agency has been systematically reviewing consumer complaints, along with detailed supervisory and enforcement data, to uncover tangible evidence of potential unlawful debanking, laying the groundwork for independent investigations driven by empirical data.

As part of its ongoing outreach and enforcement efforts, the CFPB recently updated its official website and consumer complaint portal. These updates are designed to raise public awareness regarding the issue of debanking and to provide clear avenues for affected individuals and businesses to step forward. The agency continues to strongly encourage consumers and business owners to submit formal complaints if they believe they have been unjustly targeted or debanked by their financial institutions.

WASHINGTON — In a major regulatory escalation, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced today that it is taking the next decisive step in its ongoing work to advance President Trump’s initiative to combat the controversial practice of "debanking." This targeted regulatory action aims to hold financial institutions accountable for denying or restricting financial access […]

[252
120,256,253,2278,2210,71,192,738,2209,2208,2110,255,254
post-1789","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-consumer-rights-and-protection","tag-banks","tag-cfpb","tag-consumer-protection","tag-crackdown","tag-debanking","tag-fraud","tag-launches","tag-major","tag-motivated","tag-politically","tag-practices","tag-regulations","tag-rights
["GET
