Today, counterfeiters are increasingly sophisticated, mastering the art of replicating intricate brand marks and successfully passing off high-grade duplicates—widely known across the industry as "superfakes"—as genuine articles. For luxury brands, protecting intellectual property and consumer trust has become a mounting challenge. Now, a burgeoning startup called Veritas is stepping up to combat the multi-billion-dollar counterfeiting epidemic with a specialized hardware solution: a proprietary microchip designed to definitively verify the authenticity of physical goods.

Veritas was founded by Luci Holland, a former Tesla technical product manager who brings a diverse background spanning design and art to the world of hardware technology. At the core of the startup’s strategy is a cleverly engineered chip built to be seamlessly embedded directly into retail products without causing any damage or altering the aesthetic appeal of the item. Through this embedded technology, brands are equipped to cryptographically verify whether a product is authentic, while end-consumers gain the ability to access a verified certificate of ownership directly through the company’s dedicated mobile application.

According to Holland, traditional approaches to authentication—such as standard QR codes, static near-field communication (NFC) links, or simple digital certificates—are far too easy for counterfeiters to compromise. Because these older methods rely entirely on digital records that can be easily duplicated, screenshotted, or re-associated with fake items, they ultimately fail to offer foolproof security against determined bad actors.

"Our approach combines secure, authenticated chip responses with integration into the product itself," Holland explained when detailing the core mechanics of the startup’s technology. "Our chip generates a secure response with each tap and includes a tamper-detection wire. We make the connection between the object and its digital identity part of the proof."

Building upon this foundational security model, the Veritas founder revealed that the company has officially introduced the second iteration of its microchip technology. This next-generation hardware has been engineered to overcome previous material limitations, allowing it to function reliably on metal surfaces and even be scanned through glass.

"The next-generation chip is ready for production and supports a broader range of applications, including jewelry, trophies, hard-surface products, and glass objects such as fragrance bottles," Holland noted. "Alongside our garment integrations, this gives brands more ways to incorporate authentication directly into their products."

The startup’s innovative approach is already gaining traction through high-profile collaborations. Recently, Veritas announced a strategic partnership with ATHLOS, a prominent women’s track-and-field competition founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Ohanian, who also serves as an investor in Veritas through his venture capital firm, has positioned the startup to secure its technology into elite sports events; as part of the partnership agreement, all 18 championship crowns awarded at the competition will feature embedded Veritas chips to guarantee their authenticity.

Beyond athletic accolades, Veritas has also demonstrated the versatility of its technology in the world of high-end fashion and collectibles. The company previously embedded its smart chip into a pair of LeBron James’ first signature Nike shoes, which had been uniquely reimagined by contemporary artist Adam Port. When a user taps a smartphone against the customized footwear, the interaction triggers the app to display the complete history and narrative behind the unique piece, bridging the gap between physical ownership and digital storytelling.

The momentum surrounding Veritas follows a successful early funding round earlier in the year. The startup previously raised $1.75 million in pre-seed funding in a round led by Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six venture firm. The financing also drew participation from notable industry figures, including DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang, Reys skincare co-founder Gloria Zhu, and former TechCrunch editor Josh Constine.

Since securing that capital injection in February, Veritas has actively scaled its platform infrastructure. The company has successfully launched an iOS consumer application alongside a comprehensive brand portal. This portal gives corporate partners the ability to manage intricate product records, oversee supply chain verification, and curate personalized ownership experiences. By leveraging the app and the accompanying portal, brands can extend beyond basic anti-counterfeiting measures to offer exclusive perks, such as private ownership clubs, streamlined event check-ins, and segmented early access to limited-edition product drops.

As part of its ongoing growth and industry exposure, Veritas competed in this year’s TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield, presenting its vision and technology to a global audience of technologists, investors, and media representatives during the multi-day event.

Counterfeits of luxury goods have long plagued fashion houses and high-end brands worldwide, but the problem has evolved far beyond cheap knockoffs sold on street corners.
