The design software giant announced a significant expansion of its ecosystem support at its inaugural Config conference held in India, bringing on board 20 new partners to utilize the framework.

The latest wave of integrations introduces prominent platforms and developer tools to the Figma ecosystem, including Amp, ClickUp, Dia, Junie by JetBrains, Linear, Meta Muse, Mistral, Notion, OpenCode, and Sarvam Agents. This move demonstrates that even as leadership questions the structural integrity and fairness of the protocol, the commercial and user demand for interoperability remains a driving force for the company’s strategic roadmap.

The expansion comes on the heels of public debates involving Field regarding openness, platform accessibility, and the nuances of data sharing in the age of generative AI. Just days prior to the Config India announcements, a co-creator of the MCP standard publicly voiced frustration over Figma’s initial lack of support for an open-source tool known as Pi. Field responded to the criticism by highlighting what he perceived as a double standard within the developer community, specifically pointing out that Anthropic—the creator and primary champion of the MCP standard—does not make its own cloud resources and artifacts fully accessible via the protocol.

Taking to social media platform X, Field questioned the architecture of asymmetric sharing. He wrote that it is interesting that Anthropic does not expose artifacts or other cloud resources created via MCP. He added that while the ongoing industry debate is frequently framed as a binary choice between open and closed systems—where everyone naturally gravitates toward openness—issues surrounding asymmetric context sharing tend to be ignored by critics.

Despite these pointed critiques, Field quickly clarified that Figma’s friction with the standard’s ecosystem was not absolute. He subsequently confirmed that Figma does indeed have concrete plans to build support for Pi, signaling a willingness to collaborate with the broader developer community even while challenging the underlying mechanics of the protocols they use.

During a dedicated media briefing at the Config conference, Field was pressed further on the underlying philosophy of the debate and Figma’s hesitations. He elaborated on the company’s dual desire to foster an open ecosystem while remaining realistic about the limitations and potential security vulnerabilities inherent in current protocol designs.

Field explained that while he is genuinely excited about the strides the company is making in terms of opening up its platform and ecosystem, he maintains that MCP is far from a flawless protocol. He noted that the standard has a tremendous amount of room for improvement and argued that its current architecture tends to provide structural advantages primarily to frontier artificial intelligence laboratories. At the same time, he acknowledged the clear user demand from the community, recognizing that developers online simply want a reliable protocol they can utilize whenever they wish to interact with their Figma data, a use case he wants to facilitate.

The core of Figma’s hesitation regarding a fully open integration model stems from security concerns and the risk of exploitation. According to the company’s chief executive, the primary reason Figma exercises caution rather than opening up completely is that expanding the volume of data exposed through protocols like MCP inherently increases the surface area for potential abuse.

Field clarified that the vast majority of everyday users have no malicious intent and simply want to streamline their creative and collaborative workflows by connecting AI agents to their design files. However, as a major enterprise platform hosting sensitive intellectual property and collaborative projects for millions of teams worldwide, Figma is obligated to carefully evaluate and mitigate worst-case scenarios, balancing the developer community’s desire for frictionless access with robust data protection standards.

Despite ongoing reservations expressed by co-founder and CEO Dylan Field regarding the Model Context Protocol (MCP)—the open-source standard designed to streamline how artificial intelligence agents connect to external tools and data sources—Figma is pushing forward with its adoption.
