The next-generation platform, which is engineered to support a diverse array of powertrains and derives its evocative name from the historic mid-size cars that famously rescued the German automaker from financial peril in the 1960s, was initially announced back in 2021. Now, a graduation day of sorts has arrived for the engineering and design teams in Munich as reviewers put the first production-intent offspring of this family through its paces: the BMW iX3 50 xDrive.

Promoted by BMW as a comprehensive brand-wide reset, the Neue Klasse platform throws out decades of established automotive conventions. Inside the cabin, designers have built an entirely new screen-based human-machine interface philosophy. Meanwhile, the exterior styling has mercifully been reined back from the polarizing, brutalist fringes of recent design cycles. It proudly features properly proportioned kidney grilles, utilizing a narrow profile that draws a clear, welcome stylistic line back to the classic BMW 1500.

Inside the Neue Klasse Cabin: Innovation Meets Ambition

In practical, day-to-day operation, however, the interior raises more questions than it answers. The cabin experience elicited sharply divided opinions among test editors. Some appreciated the sweeping new panoramic display layout that replaces a traditional gauge cluster pod. This advanced screen is capable of displaying supplementary information within its central and rightmost display zones, which are fully customizable using a variety of preset layouts and practical widgets.

Conversely, other drivers were decidedly less enthusiastic about the digital real estate. For those seeking a distraction-free driving environment, a dedicated "Silent display mode" is included to strip away visual clutter. Yet, several editors raised a fundamental ergonomic query: with such a massive new display positioned prominently at the cowl level, why does BMW continue to offer an optional head-up display projected directly onto the windshield? It feels very much like wearing a belt and suspenders simultaneously.

Other cabin quirks quickly make themselves known. For drivers who reflexively depress the brake pedal the moment they settle into any driver’s seat, the iX3 responds with a relentless series of warning chimes until the seatbelt is securely buckled. While eventual owners would likely have that specific behavior conditioned out of them over time, there remains no logical justification for warning an occupant when the vehicle is merely resting in its passive "ready" state, long before it has even been shifted into an active gear.

Steering, Handling, and Road Manners

The steering wheel design presents its own set of peculiar challenges. Its distinctive vertical spokes create a visual impression that the wheel has somehow been rotated 90 degrees away from the dead-center straight-ahead position. The physical topography of the rim almost forces the driver into a traditional 10-and-2 hand grip, subtly suggesting that this is where the best steering feedback and road connection will be found.

Unfortunately, that promise fails to materialize in practice. The iX3 feels notably light on tactile feedback regardless of which drive mode is selected. For buyers seeking a more conventional setup, an alternative M steering wheel is available by selecting one of the optional M Sport packages, featuring a significantly less aggressive physical sculpting.

When driven hard, the vehicle’s dynamic character begins to shine through, even if ride comfort takes a hit. The passive suspension system—which remained somewhat ambiguous during our initial European preview in Spain—has now revealed its true performance colors under domestic scrutiny. It did not take the worst of Michigan’s notoriously pockmarked roadways to uncover harsh, unforgiving responses over sharp pavement irregularities and a general lack of overall isolation from the road surface.

The chosen suspension tuning is simply calibrated on the stiff side, a characteristic likely exacerbated by the fact that our test vehicle was riding on optional 22-inch wheels, representing the largest diameter available from the factory. BMW does not currently offer an alternative suspension configuration for this model, which is a genuine pity given that the air springs available on the larger iX3 do a commendable job of filtering out minor road imperfections.

Despite the firm ride quality, the handling dynamics remain pleasingly authentic to the BMW brand DNA. Feedback transmitted directly through the driver’s seat helps differentiate the iX3 from the sea of generic electric SUVs on the market, many of which rely almost exclusively on their heavy, low-slung battery packs to resist body roll. The iX3 is genuinely eager to change direction and executes directional transitions with a refreshing, natural fluidity. On the skidpad testing loop, lateral grip measured out at 0.88 g, which falls just a fraction short of what you would typically expect from a traditional internal-combustion X3 equipped with comparable power outputs.

Powertrain Performance, Range, and Charging

Brake pedal modulation earns high marks for sheer smoothness, showing no discernible or jarring transition point when blending regenerative deceleration with traditional mechanical friction braking. Furthermore, panic-stop braking distances measured from 70 and 100 mph proved to be entirely consistent with standard X3 performance figures, despite the electric variant carrying roughly 600 additional pounds of mass and rolling on specialized low-rolling-resistance EV tires.

Under the skin, the dual-motor 50 xDrive layout delivers acceleration that is more than adequate for daily driving duties, though it may not induce genuine thrills for enthusiasts for whom electric vehicle powertrains have lost their novelty. By engaging Sport mode to unlock the full allotment of 463 horsepower and mashing the accelerator pedal to the floorboard, the sprint from zero to 60 mph flashes by in a swift 4.3 seconds. By comparison, a conventional gasoline-powered X3 M50 accomplishes the same benchmark in 4.0 seconds.

Interior sound levels remain remarkably well-controlled and closely mirror those of its fuel-fed sibling, except under maximum acceleration where the electric vehicle is only marginally louder than it is during a steady 70-mph highway cruise. Looking ahead, an even more potent 603-horsepower iX3 M60 xDrive M Performance model is already confirmed for release, and a full-fat, high-performance M variant appears to be a logical next step in the product lifecycle. BMW has also promised that a simpler rear-wheel-drive variant will eventually join the initial 50 xDrive lineup.

When it comes to long-distance touring, our test vehicle was equipped with the $2,500 Driving Assistance Professional package. Reviewers deeply appreciated its hands-free driving mode, which provided a welcome and relaxing break from continuous steering wheel inputs during extended highway stints. During our standardized 75-mph highway range evaluation, the iX3 managed to travel 330 miles on a single charge—falling 62 miles short of its optimistic EPA estimated range.

While this shortfall is certainly disappointing, it is not entirely surprising given that previous BMW electric vehicles, including our long-term i4 fleet vehicle, have occasionally fallen slightly shy of real-world EPA projections. Fortunately, the Neue Klasse platform’s advanced 800-volt electrical architecture helps cushion that operational blow. The iX3 demonstrated an impressive average DC fast-charging rate of 184 kilowatts when replenishing the battery from 10 to 90 percent capacity, completing the rapid charging cycle in just over half an hour.

The overall verdict on BMW’s latest electric offering is one of cautious optimism. While perfection has not been achieved right out of the gate, the first student of the Neue Klasse curriculum has successfully passed its initial finals. As long as prospective buyers are not entirely turned off by the polarizing interior layout and screen-heavy philosophy, the iX3’s primary shortcomings—namely a slightly stiff ride, limited steering feedback, and aggressive wheel choices—are technical foibles that a softer suspension calibration and more nuanced steering tuning could easily resolve, leaving enthusiasts eager to see how these foundational lessons translate to the upcoming Neue Klasse sedan lineup.

BMW’s highly anticipated "Neue Klasse" vehicle architecture has finally made its way from concept and overseas preview to real-world testing on domestic soil.
