When it finally debuts, however, it is set to achieve a historic milestone for the credit card issuer, officially claiming the title of the largest-ever lounge within the entire global American Express network.

The announcement from American Express comes at a critical time for the travel industry, as airport lounges continue to grapple with persistent overcrowding challenges. These capacity constraints have been particularly acute at the issuer’s immensely popular Centurion Lounges, which provide complimentary or discounted access to millions of travelers who hold eligible American Express cards, such as the Platinum Card and Business Platinum Card. To combat the strain of surging travel demand, American Express is not only pressing forward with its Newark project but is also launching a comprehensive multiyear strategy to expand its lounge operations in London, Houston, and Philadelphia.

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

The upcoming American Express location at Newark Liberty International Airport is slated to open in 2027 within Terminal A, the modern facility where the vast majority of domestic airlines as well as Air Canada operate their flights. The credit card issuer had previously indicated that the facility would welcome its first guests by 2026, making this latest announcement a brief setback for frequent flyers based in the New York metropolitan area.

Despite the delay, the updated architectural plans reveal a massive upgrade in scale. The two-story Newark lounge is now designed to span more than 30,000 square feet, a dramatic expansion that will make it significantly larger than the originally announced 17,000-square-foot footprint.

Guests visiting the expansive new space will have access to a diverse array of food and beverage concepts. These amenities will feature a Blue Roast by American Express grab-and-go coffee bar for travelers rushing to catch their flights, alongside three distinct bar experiences. The beverage program includes a traditional main bar, a diner-style specialty bar paying homage to regional American classics, and a unique terrace bar.

The terrace bar draws its creative inspiration from the distinctive landscape of New Jersey’s Pine Barrens forest. This specific space will pay direct homage to the state’s rich Italian heritage by offering an artisanal selection of gelato, freshly baked pastries, and specialized cocktails designed to reflect local flavors.

When it opens, the new Centurion Lounge will enter a competitive landscape at Newark, which serves as a major hub for United Airlines. United operates several of its own club lounges throughout the airport’s terminals. Additionally, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines maintain their own branded airline lounges within Terminal A, giving premium travelers multiple options depending on their ticket and airline loyalty.

London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

Beyond the domestic expansions, American Express is also looking abroad to strengthen its international footprint. The issuer plans to introduce a second lounge at London Heathrow Airport in 2028, strategically positioning the new space in Terminal 5, which primarily serves British Airways and its sister airline, Iberia.

The new Heathrow location is slated to measure more than 9,000 square feet, providing a much-needed premium refuge in one of the world’s busiest international aviation hubs.

This upcoming Terminal 5 facility will complement American Express’s existing lounge in Terminal 3. That current location serves a diverse mix of carriers, including British Airways and Iberia operating select flights, alongside other Oneworld alliance partners like American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Virgin Atlantic also operates out of Terminal 3, alongside fellow SkyTeam partners such as Delta Air Lines.

While London Heathrow already boasts an extensive array of airport lounges across its various terminals, introducing a Centurion Lounge directly inside Terminal 5 will provide a valuable alternative for British Airways passengers and other travelers who might not otherwise hold the elite status or ticket class required to access the airline’s proprietary lounges.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

Travelers passing through Philadelphia International Airport will also see significant changes to their lounge options, as American Express prepares to execute a major expansion of its current facility starting in late 2026.

The existing lounge in Philadelphia, which currently ranks as one of the smallest facilities within the entire Centurion network, is scheduled to double in physical size to more than 12,000 square feet. As part of the renovation project, the lounge will gain an entire additional floor, and architectural renderings confirm that the expanded space will also incorporate a Blue Roast by American Express coffee bar.

To safely execute these structural updates and construction work, American Express will temporarily close the Philadelphia lounge beginning October 16, 2026. The facility will remain shut until renovations are fully completed, with the issuer projecting that the upgraded lounge will reopen its doors by the end of 2027.

The renovated space will operate in a shifting competitive environment at Philadelphia International Airport. Chase established a major presence at the airport by launching a 20,000-square-foot Chase Sapphire Lounge in 2025, making it one of the largest facilities in Chase’s portfolio. Meanwhile, American Airlines—which utilizes Philadelphia as a key transatlantic gateway—opened a brand-new Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge at the airport in 2025.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

American Express has also set its sights on a massive transformation in Texas. By 2028, the Centurion Lounge at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston is expected to expand to more than 23,000 square feet. This nearly triples the physical size of the existing lounge, which frequently contends with overcrowding and can feel cramped during peak travel periods. Upon completion, the revamped Houston location will rank among the largest Centurion Lounges anywhere in the world.

As part of this expansive overhaul, American Express has announced that the Houston lounge will introduce new features, including a dedicated specialty dining experience designed to complement the classic Centurion buffet. Guests will also find a Blue Roast by American Express coffee bar, a full-service bar, and completely refreshed restrooms and shower facilities.

Ahead of the completion date, American Express will begin intermittently closing the IAH lounge for renovations starting in December 2026, though the issuer has not yet released specific calendar dates for when the facility will be completely unavailable to travelers.

This project arrives amid a broader wave of investment at Houston’s international hub. United Airlines is also pushing forward with its own major lounge expansion at the airport, highlighted by plans for a brand-new, 54,000-square-foot United Club slated to open later in 2026.

What to Expect From American Express in the Coming Years

The rapid pace of expansion across Newark, London, Philadelphia, and Houston highlights a broader reality of the modern travel landscape: airport lounges have grown exponentially in popularity. Driven largely by the proliferation of premium travel credit cards that extend lounge privileges to a wider demographic of consumers, demand has surged far beyond historical baselines. This growing popularity has frequently translated into crowding and wait times at existing facilities, prompting issuers like American Express to rethink the scale and capacity of their network.

Over the next few years, industry observers can expect to see continued investments in lounge infrastructure from American Express. Prior to its latest announcements, the issuer had already outlined plans for 2027, including the opening of a second Sidecar by The Centurion Lounge location in Charlotte and a significant expansion of the Centurion Lounge at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Furthermore, American Express is currently targeting a 2029 opening date for a brand-new Centurion Lounge in Boston, ensuring that its network will continue to evolve alongside the changing needs of frequent flyers.

Travelers flying out of Newark Liberty International Airport will have to wait a little longer for a brand-new Centurion Lounge, as American Express pushes back its grand opening timeline while simultaneously rolling out a massive wave of airport lounge expansions across the globe.
