Less than one month after announcing a definitive agreement, 1-800-Flowers.com has officially confirmed that the sale of its PersonalizationMall.com and Things Remembered business units to technology platform PlanetArt is complete.
The divestiture represents a significant milestone for the prominent flowers and gifts retailer during a particularly challenging financial period. As the company navigates falling revenues and shifting consumer habits, the transaction marks a decisive step forward in its broader effort to streamline operations, sharpen its business priorities, and realign its corporate portfolio for long-term sustainability.
According to industry tracking, 1-800-Flowers.com holds the No. 67 position in the Top 1000 Database, which monitors North America’s leading online retailers based on annual ecommerce sales and related performance metrics. Additionally, the company ranks No. 76 in the specialized AI Commerce Rankings compiled by Digital Commerce 360 and ReFiBuy, a dataset featured within the broader Top 1000 Pro with AI Database.
Why 1-800-Flowers.com Sold PersonalizationMall.com and Things Remembered to PlanetArt
The decision to divest PersonalizationMall.com and Things Remembered stems from a strategic initiative to optimize the company’s asset portfolio and reinforce its balance sheet. Leadership at 1-800-Flowers.com emphasized that shedding these properties will allow the organization to concentrate its resources on core operations that offer the highest potential for future growth.
"The sale of PersonalizationMall.com enables us to further sharpen our portfolio focus, strengthen our financial position and create additional capacity to invest in the strategic initiatives we believe offer the greatest opportunity to drive improved performance and long-term growth," said Adolfo Villagomez, Chief Executive Officer at 1-800-Flowers.com, in an official statement released on September 29.
Villagomez elaborated on the philosophy guiding the transaction, noting that the company is adopting a more selective and deliberate operational model moving forward.
"As we continue to simplify our business, we are taking a disciplined approach to where ownership creates strategic value and where partnerships can provide a more efficient way to serve our customers," Villagomez stated.
The CEO framed the divestiture as a foundational component of a comprehensive corporate turnaround strategy. By shedding non-core assets, the retailer aims to secure the fiscal agility necessary to navigate an evolving retail landscape.
"This transaction reflects that approach and provides us with greater financial flexibility as we continue executing our transformation and positioning the company for sustainable, profitable growth," he added. Furthermore, Villagomez expressed confidence in the future stewardship of the divested properties, noting, "We believe PlanetArt is a strong strategic fit for PersonalizationMall.com and Things Remembered and is well positioned to support the business’s continued growth and success."
Even with the ownership transfer finalized, customers of 1-800-Flowers.com will still see a degree of continuity. Following the initial announcement of the sale, the company anticipated reaching a secondary commercial agreement with PlanetArt that would allow 1-800-Flowers.com to continue offering select PersonalizationMall.com products through its existing retail channels.
Are 1-800-Flowers.com’s Digital Sales Growing?
The completion of the PlanetArt transaction arrives as 1-800-Flowers.com continues to grapple with downward pressure on its top-line revenue and digital sales performance. During a September 10 earnings call with investors and market analysts, Villagomez outlined the foundational steps the executive team has taken over the past year to steady the organization.
"Throughout fiscal 2026, we strengthened our leadership team, simplified our organization, began to modernize our digital and marketing capabilities, improved operational efficiency, and increasingly put the customer at the center of everything we do," Villagomez told stakeholders.
Despite these internal structural improvements, the company’s financial disclosures underscore the scale of the headwinds it has faced. Total ecommerce sales for 1-800-Flowers.com dropped by 13.1% year over year, settling at $1.27 billion for the fiscal year that ended on June 28. Over that same twelve-month window, total company revenue declined by 10.8%, falling to $1.50 billion.
Villagomez assumed the role of CEO at 1-800-Flowers.com in 2025, bringing with him a prominent retail background that included leading online operations at home improvement giant Home Depot. Since taking the helm, his primary mandate has centered on modernization, margin improvement, and strategic operational efficiencies designed to reverse the company’s declining trajectory.
Looking ahead, management has signaled that reversing current revenue trends remains the organization’s paramount objective as it steps into the new fiscal year.
"As we enter fiscal 2027, accelerating the recovery of our revenue trends is our highest priority," Villagomez stated during his September remarks. "We will continue building these capabilities while increasingly putting them to work to improve customer acquisition, engagement, and retention and to drive better business performance over time."
