Consumer electronics giant Newegg Commerce Inc. is deepening its footprint in the rapidly evolving landscape of agentic commerce. The online retailer has officially announced the integration of Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to facilitate seamless online checkouts directly within AI-driven environments.
By adopting the protocol, Newegg joins a growing roster of major retail brands—including Wayfair, Walmart, and Macy’s—that have thrown their support behind UCP since Google formally launched the framework earlier this year. This strategic implementation means that products sold by Newegg will now be directly purchasable across a variety of Google-powered ecosystems, including Google Search, Gemini experiences, and Google’s specialized AI Mode.
Newegg, a prominent player in the North American digital marketplace, holds the No. 86 position in Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Database, a comprehensive market research tool that ranks the continent’s largest online retailers based on annual ecommerce sales and other performance metrics. Furthermore, the company is ranked No. 429 in Digital Commerce 360’s AI Commerce Rankings, a specialized set of data available within the Top 1000 Pro with AI Database that tracks how merchants are adopting artificial intelligence capabilities.
Why Newegg is Using Google’s UCP
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how consumers search for, evaluate, and purchase products online, retailers are racing to adapt their infrastructure to meet buyers where they are. Montaque Hou, chief information officer at Newegg, emphasized the strategic importance of this early adoption in capturing modern tech-savvy consumers.
"AI is changing how the world buys technology, and Newegg intends to be at the forefront of that change," Hou said, discussing the motivations behind the integration. "We moved early to make our catalog shoppable inside AI experiences, and integrating Universal Commerce Protocol powered checkout across Google brings that vision to life in one of the most widely used platforms in the world."
The Universal Commerce Protocol was co-developed by Google in collaboration with a broad coalition of prominent retailers and commerce platforms, such as Etsy, Shopify, Target, Walmart, and Wayfair. By implementing UCP, Newegg retains its status as the merchant of record for transactions while simultaneously supplying Google with up-to-date product catalog data. This data is essential for fueling intelligent, AI-driven shopping experiences that can accurately recommend and process sales for complex consumer electronics and hardware.
The underlying philosophy guiding the partnership is simple yet ambitious. "Wherever someone asks an AI what to buy, we want Newegg ready to answer," Hou stated, highlighting the company’s forward-looking approach to discovery-driven retail.
Newegg’s Other Recent AI Efforts
The integration of Google’s UCP represents only the latest milestone in an aggressive push by Newegg over the past year to embed artificial intelligence deeply into its customer journey. Over recent months, the company has rolled out several notable AI-driven initiatives designed to improve both on-site engagement and external reach.
Among these efforts is Celeste, Newegg’s proprietary conversational AI shopping assistant hosted directly on the company’s official website, which helps users navigate complex technical specifications and product catalogs through natural dialogue. Beyond its own platform, Newegg has also expanded its visibility by supporting product listings displayed within Perplexity’s AI-enabled search experience, ensuring that potential buyers encountering product recommendations across alternative AI tools can easily transition from inquiry to purchase.
With the addition of Google’s UCP, Newegg aims to drastically accelerate the shopping timeline for users operating within Google’s vast ecosystem. Online shoppers who encounter Newegg products across supported Google platforms will now be able to leverage Google Pay to complete their transactions. Crucially, this can be accomplished without requiring the user to navigate away from their active search results, conversational prompts, or product discovery interface when they make the decision to buy.
Industry leaders have pointed to this deployment as a significant step forward for the maturation of agentic commerce. Ashish Gupta, vice president and general manager for merchant shopping at Google, noted the collaborative spirit driving these technological advancements across the retail sector.
"Newegg enabling UCP-powered checkout on Google marks a new milestone as we scale agentic commerce," Gupta said. "We’re building the future of AI-driven shopping together as an industry, and this is another strong example of businesses delivering delightful, diverse experiences and products for their shoppers."
