Dave’s Hot Chicken continues to bring the heat, officially crossing a monumental milestone that cements its status as one of the fastest-growing restaurant chains in modern culinary history. The rapidly expanding concept celebrated the grand opening of its 500th restaurant in Phoenix, marking a staggering trajectory for a brand that started with humble origins and a shoestring budget.
Those numbers represent an astonishing feat for a business that three childhood friends launched back in 2017. Armed with just $900, portable fryers, and a few folding tables set up in an East Hollywood parking lot, the founders set out to carve a niche in the hyper-competitive fast-casual landscape. What began as a makeshift late-night pop-up quickly captured the imagination—and taste buds—of local food enthusiasts, evolving from a local underground sensation into a full-scale culinary phenomenon with a devoted cult following.
The catalyst for massive corporate scaling came in 2019 when industry veteran Bill Phelps, co-founder of Wetzel’s Pretzels, signed on to franchise the concept and turn the grassroots operation into an international powerhouse. The momentum only accelerated from there, catching the attention of major institutional investors. In 2025, private equity giant Roark Capital, which manages an extensive portfolio of household-name dining brands including Subway, acquired a majority stake in Dave’s Hot Chicken at a valuation of approximately $1 billion.
Despite transitioning into corporate ownership and reaching massive scale, the brand’s expansion pace has shown no signs of slowing down. In April, Dave’s achieved a remarkable operational milestone by opening a record-breaking eight restaurants in a single day across various markets, showcasing the robust supply chain, operational readiness, and franchise demand backing the brand.
Today, the footprint extends far beyond its Southern California roots. Dave’s Hot Chicken now operates thriving locations across Canada, the Middle East, and London. International ambitions remain central to the long-term growth strategy, anchored by a massive 180-restaurant development deal covering 10 European countries. In total, development rights have already been sold for more than 1,592 locations worldwide, ensuring that the brand’s signature spice blends and neon-lit storefronts will become a fixture in major metropolitan areas across the globe for years to come.
Reflecting on the whirlwind journey from a smoky East Hollywood parking lot to a billion-dollar global enterprise with half a thousand restaurants, co-founder Arman Oganesyan noted that the initial vision was much simpler than the vast empire it has become.
"We weren’t thinking about hundreds of restaurants," Oganesyan said. "We were focused on making the best hot chicken we could and getting people to try it."
