Mercedes-AMG is expanding its high-performance lineup with the introduction of an all-new, fully electric GT SUV. Hailing from the brand’s performance headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany, the upcoming vehicle brings the aggressive design language, cutting-edge battery technology, and blistering power outputs of its four-door sibling into a more utilitarian package. Slated to arrive in showrooms by the end of 2027, the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is poised to challenge the upper echelon of the luxury electric vehicle market by blending everyday utility with hypercar-rivaling performance metrics.

Rooted deeply in the engineering DNA of Mercedes-AMG’s dedicated electric vehicle architecture, the GT SUV will utilize powertrains remarkably similar to those found in its four-door counterpart. Rather than offering a single, one-size-fits-all electric setup, AMG has structured the lineup into three distinct performance variants to cater to varying levels of enthusiast demand.

The range kicks off with the GT53 model, which serves as the entry point to the high-performance electric SUV family. Despite occupying the base tier, the GT53 is far from modest, featuring a dual-motor electric setup that combines to generate a formidable 536 horsepower. This setup provides rapid acceleration while retaining the everyday drivability and all-weather capability expected from a luxury mid-size utility vehicle.

Stepping up the performance ladder brings buyers to the GT55 variant. This mid-tier model transitions to a more advanced setup utilizing three axial-flux motors. These specialized motors are renowned in the electric vehicle industry for their high power density and efficiency, allowing the GT55 to unleash a combined 805 horsepower.

At the absolute pinnacle of the lineup sits the top-spec GT63. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible in a production utility vehicle, the GT63’s peak output reaches an astonishing 1,153 horsepower. This staggering figure places the electric SUV in elite company, offering performance levels that rival dedicated track machines while maintaining the elevated seating position and cargo space of a family-sized luxury transport.

Dimensionally, the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV occupies a footprint comparable to the brand’s existing gas-powered mid-size performance utility vehicle, the GLE63. However, despite sharing a similar physical scale, the GT SUV diverges significantly in its aesthetic identity. The vehicle wears styling that is heavily cribbed from the AMG GT four-door model, projecting a low-slung, athletic stance even with its elevated ground clearance.

The rear profile of the SUV is defined by distinct design choices carried over from the GT family, including a sleek black trim panel housing six round taillights that create an unmistakable nighttime signature. Meanwhile, the front fascia adopts a modern, electrified interpretation of AMG’s signature Panamericana grille. Instead of traditional vertical chrome slats, the new-age grille features illuminated elements surrounding a prominent, centralized Mercedes star, signaling its battery-electric underpinnings while maintaining the aggressive visage that AMG loyalists expect.

Examining the exterior details further reveals the vehicle’s functional aerodynamic and charging design. The charging port is discreetly integrated behind a seamless, pop-up panel located on the right rear fender of the vehicle. Industry observers should note that the model photographed and showcased by Affalterbach engineers is a European-market specification. Consequently, units destined for the United States are widely expected to feature a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s broader transition toward standardized charging infrastructure in North America.

As development continues at AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach, automotive enthusiasts and luxury vehicle buyers will have to exercise patience. Mercedes-AMG has indicated that the all-new GT SUV is expected to officially zoom into showrooms by the end of 2027, where it will anchor the brand’s high-performance electric portfolio alongside its low-slung siblings.
