Albertsons Companies is continuing to aggressively explore how artificial intelligence can best fit into its vast operations and expanding ecommerce strategy. As part of this ongoing technological evolution, the major grocery retailer has deepened its enterprise partnership with OpenAI, introducing a specialized ChatGPT plugin tailored for its Safeway banner to redefine how customers interact with the brand online.

According to a detailed blog post published by OpenAI, Albertsons’ internal teams are actively utilizing ChatGPT to navigate operational complexity, accelerate daily workflows, and move promising retail and ecommerce ideas toward production at a much faster pace. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the grocery giant, which currently ranks No. 17 in the Top 1000 Database, a comprehensive industry index that tracks the largest online retailers in North America according to their annual ecommerce sales. Additionally, Albertsons holds the No. 736 position in Digital Commerce 360’s AI Commerce Rankings, a specialized set of metrics available within the Top 1000 Pro with AI Database.

How Albertsons is working with OpenAI

The scope of the expanding partnership between Albertsons and OpenAI extends well beyond basic experimentation. OpenAI has officially described the collaboration as encompassing the widespread deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise, alongside custom AI-powered experiences designed specifically for grocery shoppers. Furthermore, the integration leverages the OpenAI API to power sophisticated, data-driven product recommendations and dynamic promotional insights across the retailer’s digital ecosystem.

Albertsons maintains a massive retail footprint across North America, operating a diverse portfolio that includes more than 2,200 stores spanning numerous well-known regional banners. These banners encompass its primary namesake stores, along with Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME, and Tom Thumb. Bringing advanced artificial intelligence tools to such a large and complex brick-and-mortar presence requires a careful, phased approach to digital transformation.

As part of this rollout, Albertsons officially introduced its dedicated Safeway plugin for ChatGPT. The move was designed to capture the growing segment of consumers who prefer conversational digital tools for everyday tasks. Jill Pavlovich, senior vice president of digital customer experience at Albertsons Companies, highlighted the strategic rationale behind the launch at the time, noting that consumer research consistently demonstrates a rising interest in utilizing artificial intelligence to simplify routine household activities such as grocery shopping. By enabling the proprietary plugin directly within ChatGPT, the company aimed to make the grocery shopping experience as seamless as having a conversation, meeting shoppers precisely when, where, and how they choose to engage with the brand.

The innovative plugin operates directly within the broader ChatGPT application experience. Once a user securely connects the plugin to ChatGPT alongside their personal Safeway account, the system unlocks a conversational, chat-style interface. This interface is capable of assisting shoppers with complex tasks such as planning structured weekly grocery lists, discovering recipe ingredients, and smoothly executing purchases without requiring traditional navigation through a standard web catalog.

Albertsons’ recent history of AI use

Albertsons is no stranger to cutting-edge retail technology and has consistently positioned itself at the forefront of generative artificial intelligence adoption. Previously, the company made headlines by becoming one of the very first major retailers to test ChatGPT-native advertising features. OpenAI welcomed the grocer into an exclusive pilot program alongside other retail heavyweights like Target and Williams-Sonoma. Throughout the year, Albertsons’ advertising initiatives have continued to evolve in tandem with OpenAI’s broader strategic push into agentic commerce, which focuses on AI systems capable of executing multi-step tasks on behalf of users.

Beyond its foundational work with OpenAI, Albertsons has forged strategic technological alliances with other major tech leaders. Most notably, the retailer worked closely with Google to develop sophisticated AI assistant experiences for its digital platforms. In fact, Albertsons earned the distinction of becoming the very first retail organization to implement Google Cloud’s conversational artificial intelligence solution when it debuted.

Looking ahead, leadership at OpenAI expects Albertsons to leverage its powerful large language models to construct advanced internal predictive models. These upcoming applications are projected to generate deeper recommendations and actionable insights regarding the grocer’s day-to-day commercial activities, supported by specialized employee productivity tools, commerce-related applications, and next-generation advertising solutions powered entirely by OpenAI technology.
