WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that sixty million American children have been automatically enrolled into tax-deferred investment vehicles known as "Trump Accounts," pushing the total number of participating minors to an unprecedented 70 million nationwide.

The sweeping expansion, which took effect on Oct. 1, encompasses every American child under the age of 18 who holds a valid Social Security number. The milestone marks a major escalation in the federal government’s efforts to build long-term generational wealth for American families, according to White House officials.

Speaking from the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Trump framed the initiative as a historic advancement for economic opportunity. "Today we celebrate our next historic step to ensure every American child has a fair shot at the American dream," Trump said. "The U.S. government is automatically creating a tax-free investment account for every child to grow over the course of their lives and to be used to their benefit and for their benefit after they turn 18."

The program originally launched on July 4 following authorization under President Trump’s legislative agenda, frequently referred to by the administration as the "One Big Beautiful Bill." In the months immediately following its debut, parents and guardians independently established roughly 10 million investment accounts for their children. The newly enacted automatic enrollment policy bridges the gap, bringing virtually every eligible minor into the financial framework.

Funding and Financial Contributions

According to White House data, more than $4.5 billion has already been deposited into Trump Accounts since the program went live during the summer. That aggregate total is composed of $1.3 billion in federal seed money, $2.6 billion in philanthropic donations, and over $600 million contributed directly by the family and friends of the account owners. Administration officials indicated that additional funding streams are anticipated as the program matures.

The underlying architecture of the accounts is designed for long-term growth. Contributions made to Trump Accounts are invested in a diversified fund tracking the performance of the S&P 500 Index, which comprises roughly 500 of the largest publicly traded corporations in the United States. While the accounts are registered legally under the names of the children, they remain under the strict management of parents or guardians until the account holder reaches the age of 18. Upon turning 18, the accounts transition into traditional Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) accounts, and the funds become accessible to the young adults.

Supporters of the initiative argue that early financial intervention yields profound societal benefits extending far beyond basic savings. Billionaire philanthropist Michael Dell, who joined President Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday, highlighted academic and social research supporting the efficacy of youth savings accounts.

"Our studies found that when a child has an account like this, they are way more likely to graduate from high school, to go into college and graduate to buy a home, to not be incarcerated, to be a contributing member of society, and it improves the mental health of both the child and the parent, even with a relatively small sum," Dell said during a policy event in Washington, D.C., earlier this year. In a subsequent video statement released through his philanthropic foundation, Dell reiterated the sentiment, stating, "We’ve seen what happens when a child gets even a small financial head start, their world expands."

Policy Analysis and Economic Critique

While the initiative has drawn praise from financial literacy advocates and administration allies, public policy analysts point to potential structural limitations within the program. Madeline Brown, a senior associate at the Urban Institute, told reporters that while the "infrastructure" established by the Trump Accounts "provides lots of opportunity," the program falls short of actively mitigating systemic wealth inequality in the United States.

Brown noted that the current funding model distributes standardized amounts across broad demographics rather than tailoring financial injections to the specific economic needs of lower-income families. "There’s no essentially guaranteed other money for lower income kids," Brown said. "In a structure that was aiming to reduce inequality, you would see additional annual contributions for lowest income kids, ideally from the federal government."

Despite these criticisms, experts have praised the automatic enrollment mechanism as a necessary step to ensure maximum participation.

Who’s Eligible to Get a Trump Account, and to Receive Seed Deposits?

Eligibility for a Trump Account extends to all American children under the age of 18 possessing a valid Social Security number. With the implementation of the automatic enrollment protocol, the White House confirmed that every eligible child in the country now has an active administrative record established.

Beyond basic eligibility, specific cohorts of children qualify for direct seed deposits funded by the federal government or private philanthropy. Children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, are slated to receive a one-time, tax-free government deposit of $1,000 once their accounts are officially claimed.

In addition to government funding, prominent philanthropists Michael and Susan Dell have committed a $6.25 billion investment to support children born between 2016 and 2024 who reside in zip codes where the median family income sits at or below $118,000. Children living on official U.S. military bases are also qualified to receive these targeted deposits. An analysis of Census Bureau data conducted by Investopedia indicates that approximately 71% of children under the age of 10 qualify for the $250 Dell-funded deposit, translating to roughly 25 million children in addition to those receiving federal seed money.

How Can You Claim Your Child’s Account?

Although millions of accounts have been established automatically, active parental intervention is still required to fully claim and manage them. Parents or guardians must visit the official portal at TrumpAccounts.gov to download the dedicated Trump Accounts application. Through the app, adults are required to verify their personal identity and their legal relationship to the child before finalizing the claim.

The Treasury Department emphasized the necessity of this step in an official policy release, noting that eligible children must have their accounts formally claimed by an adult in order to receive the initial $1,000 Treasury contribution.

How Will Enrollment in Trump Accounts Work Moving Forward?

Looking ahead, the Treasury Department estimates in a Federal Register notice that an additional two million accounts will be generated annually for newborns through the automated enrollment system. Defending the auto-enrollment framework, the Treasury wrote, "An eligible individual should not lose the opportunity to receive contributions or investment growth merely because no adult completed an election."

Brown commended the automated approach for "reducing friction" in government programs, calling it a step in the right direction. However, she cautioned that public awareness remains a significant hurdle, particularly among economically disadvantaged populations. Research conducted by Brown and her colleagues at the Urban Institute indicates that awareness of Trump Accounts is notably lower among low-income families—a trend reflecting broader socioeconomic disparities in financial literacy and product knowledge.

"We just need to continue emphasis on education and outreach, including in different languages with trusted messengers," Brown concluded.
