Airbnb Relaxes Checkout Chore Requirements for Guests Following Years of Backlash Over Cleaning Fees and Tasks

Airbnb is rolling out significant updates designed to limit the chores that property hosts can require of guests prior to checkout. The move directly addresses a long-standing and widespread grievance among customers who have frequently complained about paying steep cleaning fees on top of their nightly rates, only to be handed an extensive list of household chores to complete before leaving the property.

Under a new policy update announced by the short-term rental giant, hosts are officially prohibited from mandating that guests perform certain labor-intensive departure tasks. Specifically, guests will no longer be required to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, start loads of laundry, or remove trash from the premises. This updated guideline will apply formally to all reservations booked on or after November 20.

The policy shift arrives in response to years of mounting consumer backlash regarding overly burdensome checkout instructions and, in some cases, hefty penalty fees levied against guests for failing to properly dispose of trash or complete assigned property maintenance. Over the past several years, numerous frustrated travelers have taken to social media platforms to voice their exasperation, publicly questioning the logic of being forced to handle domestic cleaning chores after having already paid mandatory cleaning fees built into their booking totals.

While the changes have been widely welcomed by weary travelers, the update has sparked considerable pushback from a segment of the platform’s host community. Within Airbnb’s official community forums, various hosts have expressed their dissatisfaction, arguing that basic cleaning responsibilities are entirely essential for maintaining sanitary living conditions and protecting their private investments. These property owners point out that managing short-term rentals involves navigating high operational costs and practical demands to efficiently prepare properties for incoming travelers.

Voicing the concerns of many disgruntled property owners, one host expressed deep worry that the platform’s new policy leans too heavily toward a homogenized, hotel-like model, which they believe strips away the distinct charm and unique appeal that initially set Airbnb apart from traditional lodging options.

"Guests are given complete freedom to be lazy while the hosts bear the risk," one host wrote in the community forum discussion. "The major distinction between commercial hotels and my private home is the personal touch. Guests can certainly be expected to wash their dishes or put them in the dishwasher and remove their dirty linens. In exchange, they enjoy a personal connection and a unique environment that a hotel simply can’t provide. Plus, every potential guest has the opportunity to read the listing beforehand and decide what their preferences are. If these restrictions are removed, it could lead me to withdraw my listing and bid farewell to Airbnb after twelve years."

Despite the broad prohibition against mandatory departure chores, Airbnb has carved out a few practical exceptions to the new policy. Hosts will still be permitted to ask guests to undertake specific, situational tasks when local conditions or environmental factors demand it. For example, hosts can still ask guests to conserve water during local droughts or utilize bear-proof trash containers in rural or mountainous regions where local wildlife poses a genuine safety risk to the property and its visitors.

This latest policy modification underscores the ongoing balancing act that Airbnb faces as it attempts to reconcile the competing expectations and interests of its guests versus its hosts. The change also represents yet another calculated step by the company to address persistent consumer concerns regarding transparency, value, and overall user experience.

The short-term rental marketplace faced intense public scrutiny throughout 2024 concerning price transparency, particularly as users frequently encountered unexpected cleaning fees tacked onto the final bill only after they had already proceeded through the booking pipeline. In an effort to mitigate these pain points, Airbnb reported in 2023 that more than 260,000 hosts had proactively chosen to reduce or completely eliminate their cleaning fees. Building upon these efforts, Airbnb rolled out a major platform update in May 2025 that began displaying total prices by default in search results worldwide, a feature that incorporates all baseline fees while continuing to exclude local taxes.

Industry observers will be watching closely in the coming months to gauge how many property hosts ultimately decide that the new platform restrictions make Airbnb a less viable or attractive marketplace for their investments. At the same time, the policy shift holds significant potential to attract a broader wave of travelers who desire the convenience and space of a residential rental without the lingering frustration of feeling as though they are paying for professional housecleaning services while simultaneously being expected to scrub and tidy the home themselves.
