Target is officially making its move for the lucrative holiday shopping season, launching its new interactive Holiday Kids Catalog on Monday. Designed as a rich, shoppable discovery tool rather than a traditional product grid, the digital catalog showcases nearly 500 toys, games, and gifts in vibrant, interactive contexts. By blending video content, social-sharing capabilities, and innovative digital-conversion tools, the retail giant is looking to capture the attention of families early in the fourth quarter.
The catalog is readily available on Target.com and through the retailer’s official mobile app. While it stands as a massive collection of holiday inspiration, Target noted that it remains distinct from the company’s separate, curated toy list. According to Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Database, which ranks North America’s largest online retailers by annual ecommerce sales, Target currently holds the No. 5 position. Furthermore, the company ranks No. 54 in Digital Commerce 360’s AI Commerce Rankings, a specialized set of data available within the Top 1000 Pro with AI Database.
What’s New in Target’s Toy Catalog Experience
Moving far beyond static pages of product photography, Target’s new holiday release functions as a dynamic, shoppable content platform. The digital experience allows shoppers to watch immersive toy demonstrations and video reviews, providing a more engaging way to evaluate products before making a purchase decision. Consumers can add items directly to their digital shopping carts or save them to curated wish lists that can be easily shared with family members, friends, and other gift-givers.
To bridge the gap between traditional holiday traditions and modern digital convenience, Target has also introduced a unique list-scanner feature. This functionality allows shoppers who create or receive a handwritten wish list from the physical catalog to scan it directly within the Target app, instantly converting the physical notes into a digital shopping list. Additionally, every page of the physical catalog features a unique QR code that links seamlessly to the corresponding page in the digital version, ensuring a smooth omnichannel experience.
Cassandra Jones, senior vice president of Fun101 at Target, emphasized the collaborative nature of the new rollout. This year’s digital experience is specifically built to help families discover toys together, create and share wish lists, and ultimately find gifts that keep children excited throughout the entire holiday season.
Target’s Competition with Amazon
Target’s holiday kickoff arrives amid fierce competition from retail titan Amazon, which launched its own Holiday Kids Gift Book on the very same day. Now entering its ninth year, Amazon’s holiday publication features more than 600 toys and gifts, accompanied by an original illustrated story and family activity pages to keep children entertained.
While Target’s strategy focuses heavily on an app-native, highly visual experience centered around social sharing and creator content, Amazon is leaning heavily into voice technology and artificial intelligence. Amazon’s gift book features deep Alexa integration, allowing families to unlock a choose-your-own-adventure audio experience through a partnership with Readyland. Through this feature, children can interact directly with the book’s Forest Friends characters using any Alexa-enabled device.
Amazon, which maintains the No. 1 position in Digital Commerce 360’s Top 1000 Database, is also pairing its physical book with a curated list of top toys chosen by in-house experts, alongside advanced AI shopping tools. Parents can utilize Alexa for Shopping to make conversational requests, such as asking for holiday gifts for a specific age group, and receive tailored recommendations based on follow-up questions regarding the child’s individual interests and hobbies. Additionally, the Amazon Lens tool allows users to scan products spotted in person or across social media to find and purchase them immediately on the platform.
The State of Ecommerce at Target
The rollout of the holiday catalog comes at a time of solid online momentum for Target. During its fiscal second quarter, the retailer’s online sales grew by 8.7% compared to the same period the previous year, outperforming the company’s total comparable sales growth of 3.8%. Same-day delivery proved to be a major growth driver, surging by more than 25% during the quarter and helping Target fulfill about 30% more same- and next-day units year over year.
Overall net sales for Target increased by 5.3% in the second quarter, reaching $26.7 billion, though that financial performance was bolstered by nearly $1 billion in tariff refunds that the company recorded as a reduction to the cost of sales. Within specific product categories, Target’s Fun101 division—which encompasses toys, sporting goods, and entertainment—reported double-digit comparable sales growth in the second quarter, making it the single strongest-performing category for the retailer during that period.
